PNHS Choir Successes

  • 2016-2017
    • The PNHS Tour Choir performed at Disneyland in California as well as for clinics at the University of Southern California
    • Concert Choir sang the Star-Spangled Banner for a University of Illinois Men’s Basketball game and participated in a Clinic with Dr. Andrea Solya (U of IL Women’s Glee)
    • 11 PNHS Choir students were named to the ILMEA District IX Choir
    • 3 PNHS Choir students were named to the ILMEA All-State Choir
    • 1 PNHS Choir student was selected for the American Choral Directors Association National Honor Choir
    • Northern Voices performed as part of a workshop Mr. Hawkins presented at the Millikin University Vocal Festival on madrigal literature and performance practice
    • Northern Voices attended the Illinois State University Madrigal Festival
    • Northern Voices performed with Millikin University’s premier Vocal Jazz Ensemble "One Voice" on tour at PNHS
    • Northern Voices performed at the Millikin University Vocal Jazz Festival

    • The PNHS Tour Choir performed at the Choirs of America Nationals at Carnegie Hall in NYC
    • 13 PNHS Choir students were named to the ILMEA District IX Choir
    • 3 PNHS Choir students were named to the ILMEA All-State Choir
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble attended the Illinois State University Madrigal Festival
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble performed with Southwest Community College's (Iowa) premier Vocal Jazz Ensemble "Audio Radiance" on tour at PNHS
    • Hosted the Northern Illinois University Concert Choir at PNHS for a day of clinics and concerts
  • 2013-2014
    • Mr. Hawkins on sabbatical; Ms. Bertrand serves as interim Director of Choirs
    • 4 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA District IX Choir
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble attended the Illinois State University Madrigal Festival
  • 2012-2013
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble received the "High School Outstanding Performance" award in the Large Vocal Jazz Ensemble category in DownBeat Magazine's 36th Annual Student Music Awards
    • 12 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA District IX Choir
    • 3 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA All-State Choir
    • 2 All-State students were the highest scorers in their sections in District IX: Jazmine Hamilton and Grey Taxon
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble attended the Illinois State University Madrigal Festival
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble performed with the Millikin University Vocal Jazz Ensemble "One Voice" on tour at PNHS
    • The PNHS Treble Choir performed at the Northern Illinois University Women's Choir Festival
    • The PNHS Treble Choir performed in concert with the Millikin University Women's Choir
  • 2011-2012
    • The PNHS Music Department was selected for a $10,000 grant from the Glee Give-a-Note competition
    • 15 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA District IX Choir
    • 7 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA All-State Choir
    • 3 All-State students were the highest scorers in their sections in District IX: Jordan Caulk, Taylor Recek, Grey Taxon
    • The Northern Voices Vocal Jazz Ensemble performed as a featured guest ensemble at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference
    • The Northern Voices performed live in-studio on Chicago’s WGN-TV as special musical guests of Dean Richards
    • The PNHS Concert Choir was one of two choirs from throughout the state selected to perform at the Augustana College Invitational Honors Concert
    • The PNHS Concert Choir performed Beethoven's Mass in C Major with the Western Illinois University Choirs and Symphonic Orchestra at the WIU Masterworks Concert
    • The PNHS Tour Choir performed at the Music In The Parks competition at Cedar Point Amusement Park and placed 1st in the AA High School Mixed Choir division.  Additionally, with an overall score of 99/100, the judges made a point to note that PNHS earned the highest score given to a choir in this division in their tenures with the competition.  Niko Burton was awarded the top choral soloist award.
  • 2010-2011
    • 14 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA District IX Choir
    • 5 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA All-State Choir
    • 1 All-State student was the highest scorer in her section in District IX: Jordan Caulk
    • Following an extremely competitive audition process, the PNHS Vocal Jazz Ensemble was selected to perform at All-State in 2012.
    • The PNHS Choirs completed a week long tour of Washington D.C.  In addition to performing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and seeing some of the best attractions in our nation's capitol, the Tour Choir also competed in the Washington DC Heritage Festival.  
    • The PNHS Tour Choir placed 1st in their division at the in the Washington D.C. Heritage Festival and was also named "Most Outstanding Choral Group" for scoring higher than all other choirs at the festival.  Based on their high scores, they were also invited to perform at Carnegie Hall for the "Festival of Gold" in 2012.
    • The PNHS Madrigal Singers performed live on Chicago’s WGN Radio as guests of Garry Meier.
    • The PNHS Madrigal Singers performed live on Chicago’s WLS-TV (Channel 7), during a street side news broadcast.
    • Hosted the Augustana College Choir (with PNHS alumnus Kelli Ochenkowski) at PNHS for a day of clinics and concerts
  • 2009-2010
    • 5 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA District IX Choir
    • 1 IMEA All-State Choir student participated in the Future Music Educators Seminar
    • 2 PNHS students were selected for the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Convention Honor Choir in Cincinnati, OH.
    • The PNHS Concert Choir performed on campus of Northwestern University as guests of Bob Boyd
    • Hosted the Western Illinois University Singers (Mr. Hawkins’ Alma Mater) at PNHS for a day of clinics and concerts
  • 2008-2009
    • 2 PNHS Choir students were named to the IMEA District IX Choir
    • 1 IMEA All-State Choir student participated in the Future Music Educators Seminar
    • Walt Disney World Tour; Superior rating in the Festival Disney competition
  • 2007-2008
    • Commissioned “Sing To Me, Guiding Stars” by Bob Boyd in honor of the first graduating class at Plainfield North High School
    • The PNHS Concert Choir performed on campus of Northwestern University as guests of Bob Boyd
  • 2006-2007
    • New York City Tour with performances at United Nations, Carnegie Hall and Trump Tower 
  • 2005-2006
    • Opened Plainfield North High School with two choirs (Treble and Mixed) enrolling 35 total students (one of them male)
    • Conducted choral rehearsals and concerts in a partitioned portion of the school cafeteria from August-November while construction was being completed on the Music Wing
